Maybe you’ve heard of acupuncture and just haven’t ever known exactly how it works, or why. Or perhaps you’re an acupuncture veteran and already know that those tiny needles don’t actually hurt, aren’t scary, and that they can make you feel great. There’s nothing quite like a relaxing “acu-nap”. We are huge acupuncture fans and we know you will be too!

Acupuncture is a gentle, safe, and effective treatment for any number of conditions, and when done by qualified practitioners like ours, is 100% safe in pregnancy. Some of the conditions more commonly - and effectively - treated by acupuncture include carpal tunnel syndrome, sinus issues, morning sickness/nausea, heartburn, insomnia, back and neck pain, and more. We almost always use acupuncture to help our mamas with breech babies, and acupuncture is also at the core of our fertility treatments.

** NOTE: These treatments will be billed under Naturopathy benefits, unless you are seeing Dr. Erica Nikiforuk, who is a licensed Naturopath as well as Registered Licensed Acupuncturist.

All our Lactation Consultants are IBCLCs (International Board Certified Lactation Consultants in good standing. Some insurance policies will cover our Lactation Services by IBCLCs, we recommend calling your insurance provider before booking to see if they cover Lactation Consultation Services.

All of that happens without us having to actually coordinate any of it! (Can we get an AMEN for not having to organize ONE. MORE. THING?!)

However, from time to time, we may notice that this balancing act is a bit out of whack. Maybe your skin isn’t as bright as it used to be. Maybe your digestion is sluggish, or maybe you just haven’t felt truly well in a while. Maybe you’ve been struggling to get pregnant, or you may be postpartum and just don’t feel like your old self. That’s where Naturopathy comes in.

Our Naturopathic Doctors will work with you to figure out what’s going on, from the inside out. By really getting to know you and what’s happening, they can help get to the bottom of things and help you feel your best. Naturopaths use things like diet and lifestyle, and sometimes things like acupuncture and supplements to help balance things out for you. Our Naturopaths are experts in fertility, perinatal, paediatric and whole-family care and have basically seen it all. Nothing is off the table for discussion. If you have a concern about yourself or your baby’s well-being, come on in so that one of our Naturopaths can help you feel your very best.

Becoming a mother is a major life transition and the experience is as unique as each mother and baby pair. Maternal health considers the mother’s health during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period. There is ample support for the medical aspect of conception, pregnancy, and childbirth, but too often, little attention is given the non-medical aspects of becoming a mother. Many women look for support with adapting to the changing life roles and the diverse experiences of pregnancy and early motherhood that are specific to each maternal-infant pair.

Occupational therapists are uniquely equipped to collaborate with women to address the challenges women face when transitioning to motherhood including the complexities of establishing healthy roles, routines, and coping strategies to ease that transition. Occupational therapy can help educate women on common parenting challenges and develop both realistic expectations and effective coping strategies focusing on co-occupations between mother and infant to enhance bonding, increase confidence in supporting healthy development, engage in enjoyable age appropriate play, and identify atypical situations early to facilitate optimal intervention. Occupational therapy can also support women who are at risk for or experiencing mental health challenges and consequential decrease in functional performance related to physiological changes, role adjustment, and pregnancy loss by helping women to normalize and validate their experiences.

Ultrasound Therapy for Blocked Ducts

Ultrasound Therapy can be very useful for the treatment of a blocked milk duct. In addition, we usually also recommend a visit with one of our lactation consultants to help assess your baby's latch, if blocked ducts have been a recurrent issue.

Kindly plan to bring your little one to the appointment, as it's best to nurse your baby immediately after treatment if at all possible.

Michelle (she/her) is a counsellor and psychotherapist with a Masters in Counselling Psychology degree from McGill University, and a member in good standing with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario. She has a special interest in working with women and couples as they navigate life and role transitions, with a specific focus on pregnancy, grief and loss, trauma, adjustment to motherhood, reproductive decision-making, prenatal and postpartum mood and anxiety concerns, as well as family and relationship issues. Michelle’s passion for this work grew immensely when she became a mama herself in 2019.

Each person is unique, so Michelle utilizes an integrative approach to therapy. She primarily draws upon cognitive-behavioural, emotion-focused, psychodynamic-relational, and solution-focused modalities. For Michelle, her focus is first on building a trusting relationship with you, while creating an environment that is nonjudgmental, compassionate, and safe to process all issues related to your reproductive story. A place where you can be truly yourself. You can expect warmth, a little humour, emotional support and validation, exploration of hopes and expectations, tools for stress management and coping, and empowerment with a focus on strengths.

A woman’s reproductive years can be filled with both happy and painful experiences. Sometimes the social, emotional, and physical toll of these experiences can become overwhelming and distressing. You are not alone in these reactions. If you are concerned about mood, behavior, or relationship changes during pregnancy, postpartum, or following a loss, therapy can help. Michelle can work with you to create a plan that addresses your specific symptoms, reduces stress, builds coping skills, deepens awareness and self-compassion, restores self-esteem and hope, enhances social supports and connection, and improves overall well-being.

If you don’t see a time in Michelle’s schedule that works for you, reach out to her directly at wem@michellevittitherapy.com for more availability.
